Help the Kerbals fulfill their ultimate mission of conquering space! Kerbal Space Program (KSP) is a simulation video game that simulates a model solar system for users to explore using real life 'rocket science.' The phrase 'rocket science' is often used to describe anything that is complex and hard to understand (including spaceflight itself!). For most of us, looking at equations on a black board trying to visualize the relationship between variables is not intuitive or fun! That is where KSP comes in.
KSP allows us to freely construct, launch and perform countless unscheduled rapid deconstructions all while intuitively learning the basics of 'rocket science' without a single equation. Over the course of the program, the kids will learn the importance of basic physics and aerodynamics to overcome the atmosphere and reentry heating. Students will be tasked with learning the basics of rocket construction and space navigation while they design, build and launch their own rockets into Kerbin orbit before performing an Artemis-style Moon landing in preparation for the United State's return to the moon later this decade.
Other topics include, space communication networks, space tourism, rocket reusability and interplanetary and interstellar travel.
*while the program should last 1 hour, the instructor will be available until 6:30 for additional assistance.
The library has some laptops available but participants are welcome to bring their own Mac or Windows laptop.
